Finding success with ebay
The first thing you should do before plunging into the ebay world is to research, and decide what to sell. Ideally it should have decent resale value because ebay and paypal combined can take up to 10% of your final sale price in various fees they charge. I think $20 - $200 is a sweet spot for ebay prices. Of course if you specialize in dealing computers or plasma TVs that would be a different story.
Ebay publishes a monthly (quarterly?) Hot Categories Listing report. I'm not sure if everyone can get it or if it's only available to power sellers, try to get hold of that. That'd be a good starting point for your research.
What's probably more important, if not the most important, is to find a stable supply of inventory. Unfortunately there's no general answer to this and this is where you have to be creative and take some risks. Importing from China seems to be a good idea but there's a lot of fees involved in importing, customs fees, freight forwarding fees, warehouse fees, etc. There's also the risk of fraud or quality control if you don't know the Chinese supplier well. So you may have to go to China and visit your suppliers face-to-face.
All of these require a lot of investment upfront. If you can hook up with a wholesaler, try that route. Or you can also partner with a few friends to do the import to lower the cost.
Ok, now let's move on - let's talk about how to increase your sales.
